Jessica Clinton Park

In the Southbend neighborhood of Port St. Lucie, Jessica Clinton Park stands as far more than a place to play. Located at 3200 SE Southbend Boulevard, this well-loved community park carries the name and spirit of a young woman whose life ended too soon — and whose story continues to inspire change across Florida and beyond.
The Story Behind the Name
Jessica Lynne Clinton was born in 1986 in Stuart, Florida, and grew up in Port St. Lucie. By seventeen, she had already become the kind of person others gravitated toward — a cheerleader, a homecoming princess, and the president of the Student Council at Saint Lucie West Centennial High School. She was loved and admired by classmates and family alike.
On October 2, 2003, Jessica collapsed suddenly. CPR was performed, but her school had no automated external defibrillator — a device that might have restarted her heart when it stopped. She died from an undiagnosed heart condition called Mitral Valve Prolapse, a condition that affects millions of people without their knowledge. Add this place to your must-see list in Port St. Lucie too.
In the years that followed, her family channeled their grief into action. The Jessica Clinton MVP Foundation was established to raise awareness of hidden heart conditions, advocate for AED placement in schools and public spaces, and promote early heart screenings for young people. The park named in her honor became one of the most visible symbols of that mission — a place of joy and activity dedicated to a young life that embodied both.
A Park Designed for Everyone
Jessica Clinton Park has undergone significant revitalization in recent years, emerging as one of the most inclusive and well-rounded neighborhood parks on the Treasure Coast. The redesigned playground is built to welcome children of all abilities, including those with mobility challenges. For younger children aged two to five, there are exploratory structures and engaging geometric play features. Older children between five and twelve can test themselves on adventurous climbing structures and slides. A soft grass surface beneath the equipment adds an extra layer of safety and comfort.
Beyond the playground, the park offers a full spread of recreational amenities. Basketball courts, tennis courts, and baseball fields serve athletes of all ages and skill levels. Shaded areas throughout the grounds make it easy to relax, picnic, or watch the action in comfort. A rentable pavilion is available for gatherings and events, and free Wi-Fi is offered on-site. Restrooms and covered parking round out the practical conveniences.
A Symbol in the Streets
The park’s surroundings once featured painted hearts on the nearby roadways — a grassroots tribute to Jessica and to others living with heart conditions. When state legislation required their removal, the community’s disappointment was palpable. City officials indicated the hearts would find a new home, and the conversation itself underscored just how deeply the park and its namesake are woven into the fabric of the neighborhood.
